My Running Journey So Far

Hi all. I'm Becky, a Brand Ambassador for Medal Mad. I thought I'd recap on my running journey so far, as I know that we have had lots of new members joining Medal Mad since the National Running Show in January.

I completed the Couch to 5k program in April 2016 with the view that I would run the entire 5km distance in the Race for Life run I'd entered in June 2016. This I did. I then signed up for the Great South Run in October 2016 and steadily increased my distance between June and October. Crossing the finishing line after running 10 miles for the first time is still one of my proudest moments in my running journey.

I also discovered Medal Mad at around this time and applied to be a brand ambassador for them. Since then, I have fallen head over heels for virtual challenges and receiving medals through the post!

Virtual running fits in with my schedule somewhat easier than organised runs. I am a Mum to two small children and I'm not always able to exercise when I want to as I may not have childcare arranged. It's the reason why I dont have a gym membership. I like the fact that with running, you can leave the house, run 5km and be home again in less than 40 minutes. Most of my running happens at the weekend, and in the early morning or evening during the summer months.

As I don't get out to run as often as I like to during the winter, I also make up my miles on the cross trainer that I have at home, cycling and walking. I am determined that I will achieve Medal Mad's 500 mile challenge for running this year and 1000 mile challenge for all the forms of exercise that I do!

A big part of why I run is so I can be an active role model for my children as they grow up. We do a lot of walking as I think it's important that my children are outside, being active, in the fresh air. We cant wait to order our new Medal Kids packs. The kids now get as excited as I do when a new medal arrives in the post.

Last year I completed four half marathons. I had signed up for Medal Mad's Pursuit challenge and was determined to receive a gold 13.1 segment for it. I went on to run a further three half marathons throughout the year and I'm hoping to at least match that, this year. I'm not expecting to complete a full marathon any time soon but I would like to before I'm 40. I've got three years to achieve this!

My local Parkrun is Lee-on-the-Solent on the South Coast I don't get there as often as I'd like as it always seems to coincide with parties that my children have been invited to. In November 2017, I volunteered as pacer and I helped at least four people to a new pb. I found this as exciting as getting my own personal best time so I plan on volunteering more often at Parkrun throughout 2018.

I was thrilled to be be chosen to continue as a Medal Mad brand Ambassador for a second time this year. It's a role that's important to me and I take it very seriously. I loved being able to meet some of the team when I attended the National Running Show in January. They are a great friendly bunch and if you've found them too, welcome to the team.
